The older, primary monitor is a Dell WFP with a x native resolution; the newer Asus has a x native resolution. Cant change screen resolution on second monitor windows 10 I’d known ahead of time I would have matched screen sizes instead of just looking at Amazon’s sale price, but too late now. When I clone them, for some reason both monitors take on the newer monitor’s native resolution, leaving black bars above and below the work area on the older monitor.

I can find no way to make both take on the older monitor’s native resolution. Well, that’s not entirely true: When I first set it up, the slave monitor did take on the Dell’s resolution; losing top and bottom didn’t bother me since I primarily work on manuscripts.

After I shut down for the night and rebooted, though, they’d both switched to the Asus’s resolution, and now I can find now way to go back. After much trail and error I’ve come to the conclusion that cloned monitors must display at the same resolution, BUT I would like that to be the older monitor’s byand NOT the newer monitor’s.

How can I switch this? When the monitors are cloned, x doesn’t even appear in the pull down menu, regardless of which monitor is highlighted.

Does it have something to do with the numbers assigned them? No matter what I do or in what order I connect them, the newer monitor is designated 1 and the older monitor 2.

Currently I’m running them extended and just dragging whatever app onto the new monitor if I want to work standing up, but what I really need is a mirrored work area. If there’s no way to make the older monitor determine my cloned situation’s resolution, am I wrong and there actually IS a way to clone with different screen resolutions??? If so, how would I do that? This thread is locked.

Thanks for replying. That was the only solution I couldn’t work through. Can you tell me where do I locate the driver set up file? I’d gone into the Device Manager but couldn’t see anything for compatibility mode in there.

For the setup file, you would have to visit your manufacturer’ website. For eg: If it is Dell, go the dell website and download the drivers. Install it in compatibility mode later. I have an HP Spectre laptop running Windows I have a second monitor, an older 23 inch model HP wh and I run wndows monitors in extended mode. Originally they worked together smoothly and flawlessly, but then I had to do a Windows reset for unrelated reasons cnt a problem emerged: is when I try to drag a window from the laptop to the second monitor it doesn’t adjust to the right size and in fact explodes in size and looks gigantic until I can fully drag it across the edge of laptop into the second monitor and then eventually resizes.

It makes it very awkward to move windows around. Any ideas how monitir fix this?. This thread is locked. You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread.
